Ok, this has been a hot topic in my DMs for quite some time. So I thought I’d answer some questions I get asked frequently about raising a vegan baby…
This is Olive Ella-June. She is now two years old. We have raised her vegan since she was 5 months old.
Why is she vegan?
I have believed in a vegan lifestyle for a very long time, but always thought it would be way too hard to sustain. Long story short, we kind of fell into vegan living… I was very sick while pregnant with her. She ended up being born a month early and 4 weeks after having her, via cesarean, I had my gallbladder removed. It was all very traumatic on my body. I went to classes and pumped every hour, but wasn’t able to get enough milk for her to live on. I knew I didn’t want to use store bought formula (my choice, do your research), so I started making her formula myself. Through this process we found out she is allergic to cows milk, egg whites, beef, etc… After many hours of research (I was actually in school to become an herb specialist, so I incorporated this into my studies.) we made the decision to raise her vegan. Almost two years later we couldn’t be happier about the decision we made!
How did you make her formula and what’s in it?
I don’t feel comfortable with sharing our exact formula. I would recommend doing lots of research and then consulting with your doctor.
I will tell you there are about 13 different ingredients, I make it every two days, it takes about 15 minutes to make, and it’s MUCH easier than you would think!
What does your doctor say?
Thankfully he is completely on board. He believes vegans are among the healthiest group of humans.
What if she doesn’t want to be vegan when she’s older?
It’s just like anything. I hope she continues to follow a vegan lifestyle. I pray I show her how great it is and she is proud of how she’s raised, but if she decides it’s not for her, when she’s old enough to make that decision, I will respect her choice.
Is it hard to raise her vegan?
Not near as difficult as I anticipated! As a parent, in the world we live in, I believe in knowing exactly what I am giving my children. Sadly, you can’t trust many companies these days. Regardless of whether she was vegan or not I would be checking every ingredient.
A couple of things that are challenging are when other people buy her things that aren’t vegan. Thankfully our families and friends are so great at supporting us. I would recommend making sure you have a support system of some kind. It makes a world of difference. Another challenging circumstance is things like birthday parties or events for others. I always make sure I pack fun vegan options for her or even offer to bring a vegan dish.
I hope this helps answer some questions if you are considering raising your child vegan or even if you are just interested in choosing more plant based options more often!
Love always, Savannah. 🖤
